We are proud to announce another season of walking tours of the Nyacks for the Spring and Fall of 2008. All tours start at 2:00pm. The fee is $5. No reservations required.

April 27th &
October 19th

Tour 1
Oak Hill Cemetery

The season starts off with a tour of Oak Hill Cemetery on April 27. This is the home to many who have left their mark on the world, national and local scene. Some of the burial sites are Edward Hopper, Helen Hayes and Charles MacArthur, Carson McCullers and others in the world of the arts; a Union general who convinced President Lincoln to create black fighting regiments during the Civil War; the fashion designer who defied convention and made pants a acceptable form of women's dress; the founders of the village of Nyack; an outspoken minister and headmaster of the Rockland Female Institute who was an advocate for women’s suffrage and an opponent of slavery; two brothers who were Confederate veterans; Chipper Brown, one of two Nyack police officers killed during the infamous Brink's robbery of the 1980's and many more permanent residents.

Meets at Cemetery entrance gate on Route 9W, behind Nyack Hospital.

May 18th &
October 5th

Tour 2
Upper Nyack

This walk begins at the Edward Hopper House and proceeds north on Broadway past stately Victorian homes with ornate towers and other architectural embellishments of that time when Nyack was known as the "Gem of the Hudson." Observe the house that is known as "Pretty Penny" and find out how it got it's name; a house whose owner spared no expense in the building because it was a wedding present to his soon to be wife but in sparing no expense he exhausted his funds and was left at the alter; and other homes with history. See the Port of Upper Nyack, an early shipbuilding center and a reminder of time when Nyack was a leading boat builder on the Hudson.

South Nyack House

June 8th

Tour 3
South Nyack

Enjoy the four Victorian queens that grace South Broadway and relive the History of old Nyack as we walk by these stately mansions and hear about the famous and interesting Nyackers who inhabited them.

Meets at the NW Corner of South Broadway and Ceder Hill Ave, South Nyack.

September 21st

Tour 4
Downtown Nyack

Join with us as we walk through the downtown business area and trace the growth of Nyack from a small, late 17th century outpost to a thriving river port and leding commercial center of Rockland County. Learn about its decline and rebirth as a dynamic community and the arts and antiques center of Rockland. See Nyack’s skyscraper; where Nelson Rockefeller spent an afternoon and architectural detailing that is some of the best in the country (but you have to look up)!

Meets at the foot of Main Street, down by the river.
